Los hongos o comúnmente llamados “hongos mágicos”, han sido usados por el ser humano desde hace aproximadamente 7.000 años en diversos rituales religiosos y por un gran número de culturas a lo largo de la historia.
Para los aztecas, los hongos alucinógenos eran un alimento sagrado al que identificaban como carne o alimento de los dioses, mismos que les provocaban alucinaciones y visiones de las deidades que veneraban.
En su lengua nativa los llamaban teonanacatl, cuya etimología proviene de las voces teotl, "Dios", y nanacatl, de nacatl, "alimento".

En estos hongos la molécula responsable de generar las alucinaciones es la psilocibina, la cual es la sustancia activa de los hongos mágicos y tiene un gran potencial para tratar adicciones y otros problemas psicológicos, como la ansiedad y la depresión.
La psilocibina tiene una efectividad del 80% como tratamiento para dejar de fumar, un 50% más que cualquier otro método conocido hasta la fecha. También se está investigando para aliviar los dolores en pacientes terminales y ahora se comprueba su efectividad para auxiliar la depresión y la ansiedad.
Un grupo de investigadores del Imperial College de Londres, liderados por el Dr. David Nutt, han realizado estudios sobre el efecto de la psilocibina en humanos. En su último trabajo, exploran los efectos de dicha molécula en pacientes diagnosticados con depresión severa y que han sido resistentes a los tratamientos convencionales para combatirla.
En el estudio se evalúa el estado de depresión de los pacientes mediante el test QIDS-SR16 (una semana antes del tratamiento con la droga), siendo uno de los test más usados para diagnosticarla, donde a valor mayor, mayor es el grado de depresión. A los pacientes se les suministró 25 mg de psilocibina, siempre con apoyo psicológico mientras duraban los efectos de la droga. Un día y 5 semanas después se les volvió a realizar el test de depresión.
Para las mediciones cerebrales, los autores realizaron variantes de la técnica de imagen por resonancia magnética funcional (fMRI por sus siglas en inglés) que les permite medir la actividad de distintas regiones cerebrales, mediante los cambios del flujo sanguíneo por minuto en dichas áreas, donde a mayor flujo, mayor es la actividad. Lo primero que encontraron fue que los pacientes tuvieron un valor menor en su índice de depresión post tratamiento con psilocibina a un día, comparado con su estado sin tratamiento, indicando la acción antidepresiva de la droga. En el caso de la amígdala cerebral, la cual se encuentra sobre-activada en depresión, se vio disminuida su función post-tratamiento con la droga, concluyendo que la psilocibina revierte los síntomas de la depresión bajando la actividad de la amígdala.
Ya sabiendo que la psilocibina tenía un efecto antidepresivo, los autores midieron la actividad antes y después del tratamiento con la droga en zonas cerebrales que sabían que están afectadas en la depresión, encontrando que la corteza prefrontal y el parahipocampo tuvieron grandes diferencias para las mediciones realizadas 5 semanas después del tratamiento con la droga, encontrando un efecto de la psilocibina a largo plazo.
Al parecer, la forma en que actúa la psilocibina en personas sanas es distinta a personas con depresión, donde en las últimas genera un efecto de “reinicio” que les estaría permitiendo volver a un estado normal o atenuado de la enfermedad.
Por otro lado, el escitalopram es un tipo de inhibidores selectivos de la recaptación de serotonina (ISRS), los medicamentos que representan la mayor parte del mercado de antidepresivos.
Al preguntarle a las personas que toman ISRS de forma crónica, a menudo dicen "Me siento embobado", dijo el Dr. Carhart-Harris, lo que significa que se suprimen tanto las emociones negativas como las positivas.
"Con la terapia con psilocibina dicen lo contrario, hablan de una liberación emocional, una reconexión y que este centro emocional clave responde mejor".
Esto podría explicarse presuntamente por lo positivo del “viaje” que les provocó el componente alucinógeno del hongo, rememorando situaciones felices y alegres, sacándolos de su estado depresivo. Más aún, este estado de reinicio puede durar como mínimo 5 semanas con sólo una dosis de la droga, siendo totalmente distinto al efecto que tienen los actuales fármacos para controlar la depresión, que requieren dosis más altas y una ingesta diaria de éstos.
Este tratamiento con Hongos requiere que literalmente las personas se enfrenten a sus demonios y liberen para entrar en una fase de reinicio.
La investigación causó un ardiente debate, ya que es la primera vez que se utiliza esta droga psicodélica para el estudio en humanos diagnosticados con depresión. Este suceso ha generado un cuestionamiento ético por parte de la sociedad sobre la acción de suministrar una sustancia ilícita en humanos por sus consecuencias indeterminadas, pero que por otro lado se revela su potencial uso medicinal, siendo siempre administrada de forma supervisada y con apoyo psicológico.
Ahora, imaginasen las grandes farmacéuticas que harán con todo su poder y su influencia cuando empiece a existir una gran demanda publicada en el tratamiento con hongos, dejando a un lado el Prozac.
